Doing relevant key phrase analysis is a very powerful IMO, then other onpage optimization such as relevant Headers, key phrases in URL's and really good content becomes front and center. But with the competitors as cutthroat as it's as of late it's all all the way down to related backlinks, content and article marketing. These all assist to advertise and drive traffic to your site.
